| Plockton Historical Society is holding an exhibition of early photographs.
It is made up of two sections: images by those who lived in Plockton
and images from Dualchas Heritage Service. The images from the village
are informal, mainly of family and friends. The places are familiar,
the houses, the street, the shore, the pier, with occasional glimpses
of other parts of the peninsula and surrounding islands. These images
are mainly of people enjoying being together, standing around, sitting
on the wall, setting off in boats, going on picnics and so on. |
| The Dualchas photographs include thirty two beautiful images of
Plockton area by Duncan MacPherson of Kyle Pharmacy, who documented
life in Lochalsh for several decades. These are part of the invaluable
MacPherson Collection, donated by his daughter Mary Hudson. The photographs
of James Ferguson of Lenzie, who spent time in Strome each year, are
also represented. These are from an album of Plockton photographs
which was found in the village and donated to Dualchas some years
ago. All the photographs in this part of the exhibition are digital
copies which have recently been purchased by Plockton Historical Society. |
| There will also be material from Plockton Small Boat Sailing Club,
including hand written logs from the early years of the Donald John
Gillies Memorial Cruising Cup
1949–77. Younger members of the club were encouraged to undertake
expeditions and to record essential data including weather forecasts,
compass bearings, sailing directions, local conditions of tides and
currents ‘and other information which would be of value to future
voyagers.’ Evidence of planning and foresight was looked for,
as well as initiative and seamanship. |
| The Society plans to hold other exhibitions in the near future.
These will cover a range of aspects of life in Lochalsh at different
times. Anyone who has photographs or other documents to lend is asked
to get in touch. Images of any kind of work, including daily practical
tasks, would be of particular interest. Digital copies of the material
can be made with the owner’s permission and the originals returned.
It is hoped that the material gathered for these exhibitions will
help to form the basis of an archive in Plockton. |
