The Plockton Plan is our response to local needs and future aspirations
We’re creating a route map for a forward-looking village that works for the community while retaining its character, heritage and a warm welcome to visitors
Following ongoing concerns raised by the Community Council regarding local traffic and parking, in 2020 Highland Council provided this Plockton Traffic Management Issues plan in 2021.
The Council has since implemented the following measures:
Main Car Park: Cleared of unauthorised vehicles/materials; two disabled bays added; and introduction of a voluntary parking fee (50:50 net income split with the Community Council), and parking signs refreshed
Congestion: Traffic signage improved at Harbour Street, yellow lines added to ‘keep clear’ spaces and congestion points at Cooper Street and the main pier
Campervans: Dedicated parking area created near the airstrip
While the Council’s initial measures have provided some relief, traffic and parking remain ongoing issues. Furthermore, parking charges have created new challenges. With no Council budget available for infrastructure work, we are taking the lead to propose practical solutions.
This has evolved into creating a masterplan for Plockton that seeks to make the village work better for residents and visitors alike. It will also consider possible locations for future community infrastructure projects.

Our plan will be community-led, with extensive consultation at every stage. Following a competitive tender in February 2026, we appointed INCH Architecture to help us develop our vision for Plockton. We’ll be regularly updating this page with our progress as the project progresses.

On 8 July, we hosted an open meeting in the hall to share and sense-check the sites INCH Architecture has prioritised for improvements and future development. The eleven sites were well received by those present.

We held an open meeting on Wednesday 29th April, at 7.30pm in Plockton Village Hall.
This provided an opportunity to meet Alisdair from INCH Architecture and hear first hand how they propose to tackle the brief. Alisdair spent two days in Plockton and met a range of local groups and businesses as it’s important for all voices to be heard.
In February 2026, we sent this brief to 17 consultants, inviting proposals for the development of a Traffic and Tourism Plan for Plockton to deliver the following two interconnected needs as identified by the Plockton community:
Four bids were received, and following a scoring exercise comprising a four-person panel (two members of PDCT, a member each from Plockton & District Community Council and Plockton & District Tourist Association), INCH Architecture + Design was agreed as the preferred consultant.
Whilst all the bids were of a high standard, the panel felt INCH Architecture demonstrated the strongest balance across aspects of the brief.
INCH Architecture + Design are the UK Architect of the year 2024 for delivering social value through their projects.

Local interests came together In November 2023 and March 2024 to discuss what’s working, what’s not working and what could be done better. Note of meetings below.

As there is no single, obvious solution, and as tourism and traffic are interlinked, PDCT has secured funding from Highland Council to commission a Traffic and Tourism Plan.
The issues we are actively exploring also feature in the Lochalsh Local Place Plan (2024) which was produced by local communities and facilitated by the Kyle & Lochalsh Community Trust. PDCT and Plockton & District Community Council contributed to the eight proposals for Plockton, three of which are relevant to this work:
